Abstract

Religion has remained a significant force in shaping Nigeria's political landscape. This study examines the impact of religious movements on electoral politics and political behaviour in Nigeria, focusing on their role in voter mobilisation, political participation, electoral campaigns, leadership endorsement, and democratic governance. Drawing on a contextual research approach, the study examines existing scholarly literatures, policy documents, electoral reports, and relevant historical evidence to explore the complex relationship between religion and politics within Nigeria's pluralistic society. The findings reveal that religious movements have contributed positively to political awareness, civic education, voter participation, moral advocacy, and demands for accountable leadership. However, they have also reinforced politics identity, religious polarisation, electoral manipulation, and sectarian divisions, particularly when political aspirants exploit religious sentiments for electoral advantage. It concludes that while religious movements possess considerable potential to strengthen democratic participation and ethical governance, their involvement in partisan politics requires appropriate regulation, interfaith dialogue, and adherence democratic principles to promote peaceful elections, national cohesion, and sustainable democratic development in Nigeria.
