Abstract

This study examines the transformative impact of community-based language learning programs on Kolam women in Maharashtra and Telangana, India. The research employs a mixed-methods approach to assess the effectiveness of participatory language education initiatives implemented between 2020-2023. Data was collected from 385 Kolam women across 12 villages through surveys, interviews, and participatory observation. Results indicate significant improvements in Telugu literacy rates (47.8% increase), digital literacy (32.4% increase), and economic participation (28.6% increase in income-generating activities). The study reveals that culturally responsive pedagogical approaches, incorporating traditional Kolami oral traditions and community knowledge systems, enhanced learning outcomes by 65% compared to conventional methods. Women participants demonstrated increased confidence in healthcare navigation (72%), children's education support (81%), and market negotiations (69%). The research identifies key success factors, including peer learning networks, flexible scheduling accommodating agricultural cycles, and integration of functional literacy with livelihood skills. Challenges included initial resistance from male community members (resolved through community dialogue), resource constraints, and maintaining program sustainability. The findings contribute to understanding how indigenous women's education can be effectively designed to preserve linguistic heritage while facilitating socio-economic mobility, offering a replicable model for similar marginalized communities globally.
